Research

  • My scholarship and ongoing research program assesses on the effects of hypoxia and ischemia on the brain. My research focuses on three major areas: (1) neuropsychological function and health related quality of life following hypoxia and ischemia induced brain injury. Disorders that result in hypoxia or ischemia include carbon monoxide poisoning, decompression illness, acute respiratory distress syndrome, obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, cardiac or respiratory arrest, effects of cardiac bypass surgery, and other cardiac and pulmonary diseases. My reserach assesses cognitive, emotional, quality of life, return to work, costs, and functional outcomes of critical illness, cardiac and pulmonary disorders in adults and children. (2) The neuropathological changes as measured by neuroimaging following disorders that result in hypoxia and ischemia. My research assesses both structural changes in the brain following hypoxia or ischemia using quantitative neuroimaging methods, as well as functional neuroimaging using single photon emission tomography and magnetoencephalography. (3) Finally, cognitive neuroscience studies of the hippocampus, a neural structure that is commonly damaged by hypoxia and ischemia. In particular, my research focuses on how the hippocampus processes information in memory. For example, my research has assessed the role of the hippocampus in short-term memory, attention, linguistic, spatial and temporal processing of information.
