Research

  • During 2005 I continued to work on my Ph.D thesis (University of Cambridge, to be submitted 2006) on Love, Money and Death in South-East Asia. I worked particularly on translations of substance (Chapters and articles on the magic of capitalism and the economic policies of the Bank of Hell), on government controls of death and imagings of the after-life (Chapters - 'A Singaporean retelling of Antigone,' and 'Not only the Gods are red faced - Taoism and other activities beyond mention,' and 'more on the politics of comfort and control in the air-conditioned nation: Singapore and the legislation of manners') and on ideas of love, kinship and fear (Writings on 'Love in a time of SARS,' and 'Forgetting the Ancestors: Some graves don't need to be swept.')I returned to Singapore to conduct more fieldwork and spent the Summer in Beijing where I began a new research project on death in urban China. I left Cambridge to begin teaching at BYU in August.
